Lionel Messi, Barcelona Rally But Come Up Short In Title Race To Real Madrid

 May 22nd, 2017  |  09:36 AM  |   719 views

ESPNFC.COM

Barcelona came from behind to beat Eibar 4-2 on Sunday, but it was only enough to finish second in La Liga, as Real Madrid beat Malaga 2-0.

Takashi Inui scored a goal in each half to manoeuvre the Basque side into a surprise two-goal lead, but Barca scored four goals in the final 27 minutes to end the campaign with a win in Luis Enrique's final game in charge at Camp Nou.

Lionel Messi scored twice -- once from the penalty spot, having already missed from 12 yards -- with the other goals coming via Luis Suarez and a David Junca own goal. Eibar ended the game with 10 men after Ander Capa was sent off for fouling Neymar and giving a penalty away.

Positives

Barca showed great spirit to come back from two goals down, which sets them up nicely for the Copa del Rey final against Alaves. It would have been easy to down tools knowing that Madrid were winning in Malaga and the title was slipping away.

Another plus was a second consecutive 90 minutes for Brazilian defender Marlon Santos, who made his Camp Nou debut in the continued absence of Gerard Pique.

Negatives

So much of Barca's season could be summed up in the way they slipped two goals behind here. It's almost as if they need that extra challenge or motivation to wake up sometimes. That must be addressed next season. The biggest negative was the news from La Rosaleda, though, where Real Madrid's win confirmed a first league title for Los Blancos since 2012.

Manager rating out of 10

6 -- After three years in charge, Luis Enrique oversaw his final game from the Camp Nou dugout. Ahead of kickoff, there was a small tribute to him, with a huge banner unveiled saying: "Always one of our own #ForeverLucho". He couldn't go out with a third consecutive title, though, and for a while it looked like he would go out with a rare home defeat. But Barca got their act together and sent him out with a deserved three points and the supporters signing his name.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Marc-Andre ter Stegen, 6 -- Some hairy moments with his feet but managed to get away with it. Little he could do about either Eibar goal, both crashing in off the bar

DF Sergi Roberto, 5 -- Left far too much space for Inui to open the scoring for Eibar. Had a tricky first half and was removed at the break with an injury. That meant the end of his season, as he's suspended for next week's Copa del Rey final.

DF Marlon Santos, 7 -- A Camp Nou debut for the young Brazilian who once again caught the eye. Injuries have given him a chance this season, but his form may mean he now has a place in the squad next season.

DF Samuel Umtiti, 6 -- Barca's best summer signing once again produced another solid performance. It's likely he'll be even better next season, having had such an impressive debut campaign with the club.

DF Jordi Alba, 7 -- One of Barca's better players, but he let himself down with a comical dive that deceived the referee and earned the Blaugrana a penalty. Justice was perhaps done when Yoel saved from Messi.

MF Sergio Busquets, 6 -- An evening of highs and lows for the midfielder, mirroring his campaign in general. Produced some fine interceptions but made some uncharacteristically poor passes. Barca will need him to be more consistent next season.

MF Ivan Rakitic, 6 -- Another energetic performance from the midfielder, who has had a better second half to the season than first half. He suffers more than most though due to Barca's problems in the right-back position, and that needs to be solved in the summer.

MF Andres Iniesta, 7 -- Not at his best, but one of side's more impressive performers. Created a lot of danger in the final third and was twice denied by Yoel in the second half.

FW Lionel Messi, 7 -- Had an evening to forget in front of goal to a point, then ended the game with two goals. Missed from a couple of yards out after being set up by Suarez, and then saw a penalty saved by Yoel. Seemed to kick on a few gears after missing from the spot, though, and eventually scored his 36th goal in La Liga this season when Barca were awarded a second penalty. Added his 37th, more than anyone else in Spain's top flight, with a typically stunning solo effort in stoppage time.

FW Luis Suarez, 7 -- Missed two one-on-ones in the first half, one sent wide and the other saved by Yoel. Also had a goal ruled out, correctly, for offside. Was one of the Barca players to show the most desire throughout, though, and scored a deserved goal when he prodded home from a corner at the far post. There was still time to miss a third one-one-one, mind.

FW Neymar, 7 -- Once again a nightmare for the opposition right-back, Capa, who was eventually sent off for bringing Neymar down and giving a penalty away. However, despite his pace and directness scaring the Eibar defence, the Brazilian's end product was slightly off. That said, he did hit the post, resulting in David Junca's own goal, and then won the penalty which ultimately won the game.

Substitutes

DF Andre Gomes, 5 -- For the second weekend running, the Portuguese was asked to fill in at right-back. Did well enough here but could have done better for the second Eibar goal. May be an option to start there in the Copa del Rey final.

FW Paco Alcacer, NR -- Came on at 2-2 as Barca sought a winner. Had one chance, heading straight at Yoel.
