Brunei end AFC Futsal Under-20 Championship

Brunei ended their Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-20 Futsal Championship campaign in Bangkok with a 7-3 loss to Malaysia earlier tonight.

 

Though Brunei finish the tournament without a win, they improved as the competition progressed and showed encouraging signs in what was the team’s first international tournament.

 

Both teams had no chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals, with Malaysia carrying a one win-three loss record heading into the match and Brunei losing all four of their previous matches.

 

“The players went all out just now and it was a good fight,” said national futsal coach Qusmaini Noor Hj Rusli.

 

Malaysia’s Mohamad Awalludin Mat Nawi opened the scoring in the ninth minute but Brunei made it 1-1 two minutes later through Muhammad Nasu’rul Wafiy Hj Hassan’s free-kick after Malaysia’s Ahmad Harith Naim Mohd Nasir was shown a red card.

 

Muhammad Aidil Shahril Rosli struck in the 18th minute to give Malaysia a 2-1 lead heading into the break, and he extended that advantage a minute after the restart.

 

Muhammad Amirul Sugito’s close range shot made it 4-1 in the 31st minute but it was 4-2 seconds later when Nizamuddin Hj Ismail scored for Brunei.

 

However, a brace from Muhammad Amirul, who scored two goals in the 37th minute, made it 6-2 and ended Brunei’s hopes of a comeback.

 

Brunei’s Muhammad Abdul Khaaliq Hj Lazim was unlucky to let in an own goal a minute later to make it 7-2, and Nasu’rul Wafiy would end the scoring after netting his second goal soon after.

 

Today’s other games saw hosts Thailand shocked 7-3 by Iraq, who won all five of their Group A games and progressed to the quarter-finals as group winners ahead of Thailand - who won all four of their previous games.

 

Afghanistan beat Bahrain 5-1 in the day’s other game, both teams having no chance of qualifying for the last-eight no matter the outcome of their tie.
