Thousands of Buddhist Tzu-Chi Merits Society Malaysia members gathered at the Han Chiang High School field for the triple celebration of Buddha’s birthday, Mother’s Day and Tzu-Chi’s 51st anniversary.
Society commissioner Khoo Boo Leong said the Buddhist Tzu-Chi Foundation headquarters in Taiwan observes the triple celebration on the second Sunday of May annually.
“Tzu-Chi volunteers globally will organise the grand Buddha bathing ceremony in their respective homeland.
“The Tzu-Chi Foundation also celebrated its 51st anniversary through the spirit of perseverance and frugality as taught by founder Master Cheng Yen.
“She is also behind the bamboo saving concept where the belief that a small sum can go a long way in doing good deeds,” he said yesterday.
Khoo said more than 5,000 members attended the ceremony at the field, adding that similar celebrations were held in nine other venues in Penang, Kedah and Perak.
Members gathered as early as 5am at the field.
“Besides singing, members also came together to create a giant human formation of the word ‘Tzu-Chi’ and two bamboo coin containers,” he said.
There was also the Buddha bathing ceremony and a drum performance.
Members also took the opportunity to donate to the needy during the event.
