Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) will be holding a ‘Jasamu Dikenang’ special assembly on May 6 to celebrate, remember and honour former leaders for their enormous contributions that have made Sarawak better today.

Some 5,000 grassroots leaders and delegates throughout Sarawak are expected to congregate at the assembly to take place in Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

Chief Minister and party president Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg disclosed this at a press conference after a meeting at the PBB headquarters yesterday.

“It is them (past leaders) who have put a strong foundation for PBB to lead, and uniting people of this multicultural society, ensuring a harmonious environment for all of us to live in,” he said, pointing out it is the party’s culture to honour the sacrifices of past leaders for they have served the state with distinction.

“All these values have formed the basis for Sarawak to move forward and reach greater heights,” he added.

For Sarawak to soar higher, Abang Johari emphasised that Team Adenan, which he now leads, must reaffirm and recommit their loyalty to the Barisan Nasional leadership and PBB’s struggles.

“We are the second generation of leaders who have had trainings and we are confident to continue pursuing what have been laid down by the past leaders.

“The environment has changed and the challenges we face today are different especially with the advancement of technology and rise of the social media,” he added.

Emphasising the need to adjust to the changing eco-system, Abang Johari said PBB’s approach must match the steps of the young generation so as to meet their expectations.

Three leaders with outstanding lifetime contributions to Sarawak namely; Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, former deputy chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang and former chief minister the late Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem will be recognised at the assembly.

“Tun (Taib) has made extraordinary achievements throughout his lifetime including strengthening the development of PBB. In addition, Samarahan which is his brain child has now become a prosperous area known as the city of knowledge while he developed SCORE (Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy) to spur the economy of this state,” he shared.

“Jabu, with passion for the rural people, has pulled them together to go on the same direction. He has gone to the remotest areas and brought development there while focusing on importance of education as the key to change,” he said.

“The late Tok Nan has done so much for Sarawak in such a short period of time, starting with mitigating the cost of living of Sarawakians by abolishing toll to lowering electricity tariff. Later he laid out an inclusive, people-centric policy that has won the people over, leading to a landslide victory in the last state election,” he added.

These leaders, Abang Johari emphasised, had paved the way and set a strong foundation for Sarawakians and the state’s leaders to continue the struggle to build a better Sarawak.

The meeting was attended by top party leaders including Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Second Resource Planning and Environment Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Public Utilities Minister Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi, Youth and Sports and Solidarity Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin, State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar and Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah.
