BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
The move by the Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College, KUPU SB to elevate the status of Religious Teaching by making Al-Quran the main resource and compulsory core study for every student is timely. The view was voiced by the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs while officiating the Malay Archipelago Regional Seminar on Al-Quran and Kitab Turath Education at the university college yesterday.
The Turath books are religious masterpieces written by Muslim scholars of past eras. Dato Paduka Awang Haji Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohammad Daud expressed confidence that the effort would produce excellent and glorious results. On the study of the Turath Books, the Deputy Minister said the integration of traditional and the latest knowledge is appropriate and should be learnt by students at all levels.
This will assist in producing learned educators whose practices are in the mould of the earliest and most prominent scholars of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah or the Followers of the Prophet's Traditions. Dato Paduka Awang Haji Abdul Mokti added it is hoped the students will not only read Al-Quran well but also understand the verses. Besides that, the Deputy Minister said, the Intellectual Development Co-curriculum Programme can also assist students to gain the skills in reading the Turath Books and understand their contents. The study of Kitab Turath is also opened to the public at a number of mosques.
With the theme, 'Strengthening Al-Quran and Kitab Turath Education, The Pillar of Islam's Excellence', the 2-day seminar is organised in conjunction with the 10th Anniversary of KUPU SB. The seminar is attended by 400 participants and is among the university college's continuous efforts in upholding and propagating the teachings of Islam through Religious Teachers Education and empowering the teaching and learning of Al-Quran and the Turath Books.
