BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

The Magistrate’s Court brought a local woman yesterday with the charge of abusing her 6 years old son.

The local 34 years old woman is accused of burning the child with cigarette butts between 1st and 8th March at a block of flats in Kiarong.

It was said that the victim suffered from five cigarette burns to his leg. DPP Shamshuddin bin Haji Kamaluddin applied for the case to be heard at the Intermediate Court. The offence is punishable under section 28(1) of the Children and Young Persons Act (Chapter 219), with a fine of not more than $20,000. It also carries a penalty of prison term of not more than 10 years, or 10 strokes of the cane, or both. Magistrate Pengiran Shahyzul Khairuddien bin Pengiran Abdul Rahman granted bail to the defendant, and fixed 18th April for the next mention of the case.
