What was supposed to be a happy drinking session among friends ended in tragedy when one of them was stabbed to death during an argument.
Sarawak CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Dev Kumar said police in Sarikei, about 45-minute drive from here, had arrested three suspects aged between 28 and 37 in the case.
The first suspect, a 28-year-old labourer, was picked up at about 2pm Wednesday at a longhouse at Sungai Entebu Sari, Sarikei. According to SAC Dev Kumar, the man had admitted to the crime.
The man told police that he and his friends were having a drinking session on March 13 when he got into a heated argument with the victim.
He stabbed the victim several times, then dragged and hid the body in some bushes.
"The knife that was used to stab the victim was recovered in the suspect's house," SAC Dev Kumar said, adding that further investigations revealed that one of the other two suspects held the victim during the stabbing.
He said the case came to light on March 18 when Sarikei police were informed of the discovery of a body in an oil palm plantation at Ulu Sungai Enseluai, Sarikei.
The plantation manager, who made the discovery, led police to the body.
No identification papers found on the body.
The body was positively identified by the family the next day as one Jampong Jon, 52, from Rumah Rasit, Sungai Sentebu, Sarikei, who was a widower and a part-time labourer.
