An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 hit Kumamoto prefecture in southern Japan on Tuesday, broadcaster NHK said.
A tsunami warning had not been issued, NHK added.
Two deadly quakes hit the same region last week, killing 44 and injuring more than 1,000.
