According to a press release, the drop in overall CPI in December 2016 was due to lower prices of Clothing and Footwear (11.6 per cent); followed by Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance (2.2 per cent) and Miscellaneous Goods & Services (1.2 per cent)).
Indexes that recorded increases were Transport (2.1 per cent) and Recreation and Culture (2.0 per cent). These were due to higher prices of motor car; passenger transport by air, holiday packages/pilgrimages; computers and computer accessories; and telephone and telefax equipment.
Meanwhile, Education index remained unchanged. The year-to-year comparison (December 2016 compared to December 2015) showed that the CPI declined by 1.6 per cent. Meanwhile, the average CPI for 2016 recorded an inflation rate of -0.7 per cent.
