It’s a week to Chinese New Year and already the festive holiday is making its second appearance on Pos Malaysia stamps and first day covers.

After featuring serama chickens to mark the Year of the Fire Rooster, the stamps will see traditional Chinese festive delicacies.

There will be three different stamp designs highlighting festive must-haves such as mandarin oranges, nian gao (kuih bakul), spring rolls, lotus root soup and poon choi, a dish made up of various seafood to symbolise a bountiful harvest.

Pos Malaysia stamp and philately unit head Diyana Lean Abdullah said these stamps were the first to be issued for a series featuring Malaysian festive food this year.

“We will feature festive delicacies of the Kadazandusun and Dayak in conjunction with the Harvest Festival and those of the Malay and Indian communities for Hari Raya and Deepavali,” she said.

Printed in limited quantities of 150,0000 each, the stamps are valued at between 85 sen and RM1.05. Pos Malaysia will also issue 30,000 copies of a limited edition miniature sheet in the shape of a candy tray at RM5 each.

The series’ first day covers – with only 40,000 copies at 55 sen each – will be available on Jan 24 at all Pos Malaysia outlets.

Pos Malaysia group CEO Datuk Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh said the issuance of the Festival Food Stamp series during the Chinese New Year was to preserve the importance of family values and traditions.

“Each delicacy symbolises good fortune, wealth and happiness. So it is customary to share these with your loved ones,” he said.
