Former Policeman Sentenced to 12 Months Imprisonment For Corruption

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Former L/Cpl 3541 Mohammad Hannah bin Abas was found guilty of receiving bribe money from a man to withhold taking action against him for a traffic offence.

The High Court yesterday dismissed the appeal by the former policeman against his conviction for corruption.

He was sentenced by the Magistrate's Court to 12 months' imprisonment. Yesterday in rejecting the appeal, Justice Dato Paduka Steven Chong said that corrupt policemen must expect severe sentences if they are convicted of receiving bribes, and create a deterrent effect in the public interest.

Lawyer Kamal Shaari, who represented the appellant, also contested the Magistrate's findings who had "wrongly accepted the uncorroborated and inconsistent evidence from the person who gave the bribe".

"An appellate court will not disturb findings of fact unless they are plainly wrong or clearly reached against the weight of the evidence," said Justice Dato Paduka Steven Chong who found no merit in the lawyer's contention bearing in mind that evidence of the person who gave the bribe was the foundation of the case.

DPP Sharon Yeo appeared as respondent in the appeal.
