MPRT Targets Increase Tourist Arrivals in 2020

Under its 2016-2020 Strategic Plan, the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism targets increasing tourist arrivals from 218,000 in 2015 to 450,000 in 2020. Revenue generated from tourism is also expected to reach $335 million dollars by 2020.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, from January to September 2016, the total number of international tourist arrivals by air is 163,023 compared to 165,872 over the same period in 2015. Although there was a decline of 1.7 per cent on year to year growth, tourist arrivals from the Far East such as Hong Kong, South Korea, China and Japan have continued to show positive growth with an increase of 41.3 per cent, 26.7 per cent, 9.8 per cent and 2 per cent respectively.
Meanwhile, Malaysian tourists recorded the highest arrivals to the country from January to September 2016, due to easy air accessibility. It was followed by the People's Republic of China, Indonesia, Philippines and Singapore. Overall, the five countries have contributed the majority portion of international tourist arrivals into the country for the period of January to September 2016 at 67.2 per cent. Meanwhile, 43.5 percent of the arrivals were for the purpose of leisure and holiday. China and Malaysia remained as the main contributors for the leisure and holiday market at 56.8 percent of total arrivals in 2016.
The Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism has taken various initiatives in order to promote local tourists destination such as the Temburong district. More exciting events have also been lined up for 2017 such as the Gastronomy Week, the Golden Jubilee of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's Accession to the Throne and the ASEAN Federation of Cardiology Congress.
