The Pongal Festival was celebrated by the Indian Tamil community at the Indian Association of Belait (IAB) building in Seria on January 14.
The event was headed by IAB President Salimo, who began the ceremony with the boiling of clay-pot sweet rice and milk - a traditional practice.
The event continued with games like snow-bowling, blind drawing, blind pot-breaking, rope pulling and other fun-filled activities for the children and adults. Prizes were given to everyone. Celebrants were also treated to a sumptuous vegetarian lunch served on banana leaves.
While speaking to the Pongal Committee President, BC Mohan, said that the Pongal Festival or harvest festival, is fundamentally a thanksgiving ceremony where agriculturalists celebrate in mid-January, to thank the nature spirit, and farm animals for contributing to a successful harvest.
Other people celebrate the festival to honour and thank farmers, who are producing food. Globally the event encourages social cohesiveness and integration of all people for a common festival to give tribute to the agriculturalists and their workmanship.
