BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The Ministry of Education, through the Special Education Unit (SEU), on Saturday sent three gifted students and a teacher to represent Brunei Darussalam in the 8th Asean + 3 Students Camp & Teacher Workshop for the Gifted in Science (ACGS) in Beijing, People's Republic of China.

Representing Brunei Darussalam are Joan Lim Zhee Ying from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (MSPSBS); Nur Almas Barizah binti Ali Hazis from Sufri Bolkiah Secondary School and Dayangku Siti Abadi binti Pengiran Haji Shariful from Jerudong International School. They
were accompanied by Nurul Syazana binti Ismail, a lead teacher for Gifted Education from MSPSBS.

The camp - running from January 1519 and held in Beijing No 35 High School, Beijing, China - is hosted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and China Association for Science and Technology, and organised by the Children & Youth Science Centre (CYSC) of China Association for Science and Technology, supported by the Asean + 3 Centre for the Gifted in Science and Asean Secretariat.
ACGS is a prestigious international programme aimed at providing opportunities for the gifted students and their educators to participate in science research activities.

This year, with its theme 'Dreamer, Thinker, Maker', the camp is offering five courses on inventions, namely, designing and making bridge models; aircraft models; satellite models; soccer robot operation and 3D printing. They will be delivered in the form of lectures, group work, and experiments.

Students are expected to collaborate, problem solve, and present their findings with their team members, as well as meet with like-minded peers from the Asean + 3 nations who share the same interests.

Simultaneously, the Teachers' Workshop aims to train teachers who are involved in the education of the gifted in science, which will include educational workshops, presentations and discussions of current best practices in the areas of gifted education and science education in general.

Students in these programmes were nominated by school and selected following a series of screening processes. This annual screening and identification process, conducted by the Gifted Educational Programmes and Services (GEPS) at the SEU has been one of the ways to identify students for international gifted programmes.
