Suggestion To Improve Nightwatch Programs

 December 28th, 2016  |  11:42 AM  |   10328 views

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

As an avid follower of local news, I'm delighted to know that there are initiatives taken by the proper authorities to curb or deter illegal and criminal activities through the neighborhood watch program, which I understand has been active for some time now. However, in saying that, I am writing to express my concern on the effectiveness of such program and here is why.

Twice this year I have experienced break-ins at my property in the Tanjong Bunut Area. Naturally, I had valuable goods, equipments stolen and suffered damages to my property. Fortunately, no one was injured in both incidents. I reported both incidents to the police department along with CCTV footage of the break in, but to no avail, nothing was recovered and no one is suspected as of yet. Additionally, I am not the only to suffer such fate; my neighbors also share the same unfortunate experience. The lack of security and safety is worrying, especially when you have loved ones staying with you. As a result, this is why I feel the need to point out the effectiveness or lack thereof in regards with the neighborhood watch program.

I understand there must be a number of theft cases happening everyday and it will be impossible for the Police force to attend to them all at once. Therefore, this is what makes me question effectiveness of the neighborhood watch program. Why is it only conducted in some villages while houses in the nearby villages are being neglected? What is the scope of the neighborhood watch? What actions are being planned to those Villages who do not have neighborhood watch? Lastly, how can we improve the program?

Ultimately, taking into account the current budget constraints, I suggest each house in the village that ARE NOT willing to partake in the neighborhood watch to contribute a minimum amount of $5 to the volunteers who take part in the neighborhood watch, as an incentive for their dedication and commitment to maintain the security and safety of the villages. (with the contribution amount ,a hired nightwatch could also be made possible)
