HA NOI,VIETNAM : National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung held talks with visiting President of the Cambodia Senate Say Chhum in Ha Noi yesterday, dealing with an array of important issues of comprehensive co-operation between the two legislatures.

Hailing Cambodia's developmental achievements made recently, Hung reasserted that Viet Nam placed special importance to its co-operation and friendship with neighbouring countries, including Cambodia.

He expressed his belief that the visit by the Senate President would cement the traditional friendship between the two countries.

The Cambodian guest showed his joy at visiting Viet Nam and spoke highly of the country's renovation accomplishments. He said he believed that Viet Nam would reap new achievements in her industrialisation and modernisation under the leadership of the Communist Party of Viet Nam.

Regarding parliamentary co-operation, the leaders said they were delighted at the sound relations between the two lawmaking bodies, the frequent exchanges of all-level visits, human resources training, experience sharing, and mutual support at regional and international forums.

Building on the traditional friendship and growing co-operation, the leaders agreed to increase all-level visit exchanges and support each other at parliamentary forums.

The legislatures would step up their role in supervising the enactment of reached agreements, especially the progress of border demarcation and marker planting, and co-operation in economics, trade, investment, culture-education and national defence, they stressed.

Viet Nam would continue providing the Cambodia National Assembly with technical assistance and support in personnel training and human resources development.

The two countries would work together to educate the young generation on the two countries' traditional solidarity and special friendship, the leaders said.

They agreed that the countries would increase co-operation, share viewpoints and consult each other in international issues of shared concerns.

Touching upon bilateral affiliation, the Cambodian Senate President gave high estimation to the pace of border demarcation and marker planting, citing the fulfilment of 83 per cent of the workload.

That outcome reflected concerted efforts made by the two countries' people in implementing a co-operation agreement on the land border, determinedly building a borderline of peace, stability and development.

Say Chhum spoke highly of Viet Nam-invested projects in Cambodia, mentioning those in telecommunication, mining, healthcare, and banking in particular.

He expressed his hopes that two-way trade would hit US$5 billion this year and soar in the following years.

He arrived in Ha Noi on Tuesday for an official visit through today.

On the same day, the Cambodian official had separate meetings with Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Truong Tan Sang and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

Say Chhum told the Vietnamese Party leader that he believed that under the leadership of the Communist Party of Viet Nam, the Vietnamese people would harvest new successes in national construction and development.

He affirmed that the Cambodian Senate will continue pushing the implementation of signed agreements and joint statements during visits by leaders of the two Parties and countries.

The Cambodian Senate leader took the occasion to expressed gratitude for the kind help that Viet Nam has provided to Cambodia's national liberation cause and its rescue of the Cambodian people from Pol Pot's genocidal regime in 1979, as well as the assistance to Cambodia's national development.

The Party leader, for his part, made it clear that Viet Nam continually treasured the development of traditional friendship and co-ordination with Cambodia for the benefit of the two peoples.

He asked the two legislatures to continue sharing experience and information while working closely together at international forums.

He urged the legislatures to monitor and accelerate the implementation of signed agreements and conventions.

In another meeting, President Truong Tan Sang asked Cambodia to continue providing support for Vietnamese nationals living in the country so that they can contribute to Cambodia's national construction and the friendship and co-operation between the two countries.

Senate President Say Chhum affirmed the Cambodian Senate's support of efforts to promote comprehensive links between the two nations, including working closely with Viet Nam on border demarcation and building a borderline of peace, friendship, stability, co-operation and development.

The traditional friendship and mutual support between the two countries were built with the sacrifice of many voluntary Vietnamese soldiers and experts, he said, adding that the Cambodian people would forever bear in mind the great help of Viet Nam during the most difficult time of Cambodia.

He expressed joy at the strengthened ties between the two countries, noting that last year, Viet Nam became the sixth largest investor in Cambodia and the top source of tourists to the country.

In his meeting with the Cambodian guest, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung suggested that Viet Nam and Cambodia enhance co-operation in all areas, especially in economics, trade, investment and tourism.

Viet Nam would do its utmost, together with Cambodia, to deepen the two countries' relationship in a pragmatic and effective manner, for the interests and common development of the two nations and peoples, the Prime Minister said.

He expressed his hope that the two sides would closely co-ordinate with each other in speeding up border demarcation and marker planting, building a shared border of peace, friendship, stability, co-operation and development, and promoting economic, cultural and social ties between their border localities.

He proposed Cambodian competent agencies join hands with the Vietnamese side to soon address issues regarding the legal status of Vietnamese nationals in Cambodia, helping them stabilise their lives in the host country.

For his part, the Cambodian guest said he was delighted to witness the all-round achievements Viet Nam has recorded.

He applauded the traditional friendship and comprehensive co-operation between the two countries, particularly in economics, trade and investment.

He affirmed the Cambodia Senate's backing of the two Governments' efforts in stepping up the comprehensive ties.
