Vice Premier Urges Xaysomboun To Focus On Infrastructure Development

While meeting with senior officials of Xaysomboun Province on Dec 7 on the occasion of his guidance visit to the province, Deputy Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone urged local authorities to attach importance to the development of basic infrastructure so that they can ensure local people enjoy better livelihoods.

 

In addition to commending local authorities and people of the province upon their efforts in socio-economic development, the deputy prime minister urged residents the province to continue to implement the millennium development goals, especially those concerning education and health.

Mr Sonexay asked the province to enhance the capacity building of the party members and government officials so that they can play an important role in implementing the activities of the Party and government.

He urged the officials to promote commercial agriculture and animal husbandry among local people and continue to attract domestic and foreign investment to the province to tap its potentials.

Xaysomboun Province was established on Dec 13, 2013 according to the resolution of the National Assembly. It borders Vientiane Province, Xieng Khuang, Luang Prabang, and Bolikhamxay. The province is 8,500 sq km in size and comprises five districts (95 villages). Its population is 95,200 people and dominated by three main ethnic groups Lao Loum or Lowland Lao, Hmong, and Kmu.

The gross domestic product of the province in 2015 was 843 billion kip (per capita GDP=US$1,229), increasing by 10.27% as compared to the year before.

Maj. Gen. Thongloy Silivong, the governor of Xayaboury, reported to the visiting deputy prime minister that poverty in the province has been reduced significantly to currently 1,809 families or 13.85% of its population.
