Infanticide Case Could Face Up to 10 years and Fine

The Magistrate's Court yesterday remitted a case of infanticide to be heard in the High Court and ordered the further remand of the Indonesian woman who is accused in the case for two weeks.
Desi Thania , 19 is alleged to cause the death of a her infant. It was believed that the 19 year old who at that time was at a mentally unstable state, threw her new born baby girl into the Brunei River from the toilet window of a house at Kampong Sungai Besar. The incident happened at 3am on August 7.
The defendant was said to have been in a disturbed state of mind while doing this, not having fully recovered from the effects of childbirth.
No plea has been taken from the defendant.
The High Court will furnish dates for further mention of the case.
Criminal Investigation Department officers from the Women and Children's Abuse Investigation Unit arrested Desi at 5pm on August 8,2016. Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman ordered the defendant to return to court on December 21 if the High Court did not call the case by then.
The charge preferred by DPP Zuraidah Sidek against the defendant carries the penalty of imprisonment of up to 10 years and a fine.
