In probably one of the most Australian moments ever, a man was filmed punching a kangaroo in the face after he went to the rescue of his dog.

Footage of the incident has gone viral since it was posted on Facebook last night, although it is not clear when it took place.

It shows the man strike the marsupial after it was said to have trapped his dog by holding it around the neck.

The narrator of the video, which appears to have been shown on a TV programme. explains that realising the potential danger his animal was in the owner runs to its assistance.

When the kangaroo finally releases the dog he stands up to stare at the man who then strikes it in the face.
