The Brunei Job Fair 2016 concluded yesterday, and recorded a total of 21,001 visitors. Out of the numbers, 5,081 people were identified as unemployed. There are currently 12, 800 active jobseekers in the country compared to 9,282 from the previous Job Fair held last year.
Carrying the theme of “Realising employment excellence through capacity building, competency and performance”, the job fair has been well received over its 3 day event. The Job fair was hosted by the Energy and Industry Department at the Prime Minister's Office, and was held from November 27-29 at Exhibition Halls 1 and 2 of the Bridex International Exhibition Centre.
Over its 3 day course, a number of programs and sharing sessions were held during the job fair. Some of the program includes CV writing, Career Counselling workshops and Improving Digital Literacy skills hosted by different companies. The main aim was to help the employability and marketability of local job seekers.
According to an interview with Izzudin Hussin of TechOne Solutions Sdn. Bhd, they have received a total of 60 participants over the past 3 days. Tech One solutions Sdn Bhd. Conducted sessions on Digital Literacy Skills. The sessions covers 6 topics which are “Know your IT devices”, “Be effective in Word Processing”, “Be successful with Spreadsheets, Be productive with email communication” ,” Be successful with presentations” and” Internet etiquettes and Social Network e-safety”.
Another highlight of The Brunei Job Fair 2016 was the 'Perseverance, Resilience and Success' talks, during which inspirational individuals were invited to speak about their journey to success. The talks were hosted by DARE (Darussalam Enterprise) which aims to encourage and inspire local jobseekers to take up entrepreneurship.
One of the sessions held was a facilitated session by Louis Loo, Business Developer and Founder of Plus Magazine Brunei. The health focused magazine has been around since 2014. Louis shared his personal journey to the audience and his insights on the current market trend. He shared his experiences on building a startup company. “Working for a startup than working for a structured company, is that when it comes to working in a structured company there a system. If you are in marketing, you focus on marketing. However in start ups, you have to touch up on everything. From there you can gain a lot of experience”. He recommends taking experiences from start ups and building a company brand is challenging yet rewarding. He also urged jobseekers to build up a portfolio by taking freelance and part time jobs.
DARE also held sharing sessions by previous Startup Bootcamp Programme participants who shared their experiences being in the programme and on the conception of their companies. DARE also opened up registrations for their next cycle of the Industry Business Academy (IBA) and the Startup Bootcamp Programme. So far, 324 jobseekers have registered for the IBA and 270 for the Startup Bootcamp Programme.
In a press release, the organisers stated that jobseekers are more than welcome to approach the Job Centre Brunei, which can provide the necessary platform for local jobseekers to grow, learn, and improve their CV and interview skills.
These programmes will also assist in ensuring that the skills gained will be relevant to the manpower demand of the industry.
