Bandar Seri Begawan

THE Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye yesterday hosted some 24 young Bangladeshi diplomats for a presentation and knowledge-sharing session on the nature and forms of diplomacy in practice.

Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Brunei Darussalam Prof. Dr. Hamit Ersoy conducted the session to share his experiences and guidance on the role that diplomats play in international relations and the varying forms of diplomacy that diplomatic missions engage in.

The Ambassador touched upon the forms and distinctions between public diplomacy, cultural and gastronomical diplomacy to name a few. Ambassador Prof. Dr. Hamit Ersoy then briefed the young diplomats on how such forms of diplomacy, globally and in Brunei Darussalam, are underpinned by collaborative action in coordinating activities between any given foreign mission and the host country.

Bangladeshi High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Nahida Rahman Shumona was also present and said that having been in touch with Ambassador Prof. Dr. Hamit Ersoy and spouse Lale Ersoy over the last three years, she feels the young diplomats would benefit from the Ambassador’s academic background and successful track record of public and cultural diplomacy as well as from Lale Ersoy’s experience with Bangladesh and her perspectives regarding the Rohingya refugees.

Asked how the session will contribute to the development of the young diplomats, High Commissioner Nahida Rahman Shumona said: “they will learn how to use their own skills to attract media to their work, which we need as diplomats, and the Ambassador and Madame have done this well”.

She added that the young diplomats “will be able to apply this knowledge in their postings when they are posted abroad, to think outside the box with their community outreach”.

The High Commissioner further added that Turkiye is a friendly country to Bangladesh and it is her hope that the 24 junior diplomats increase their practical knowledge through first-hand experience of talking to a senior Turkish diplomat and visiting another embassy.
