UNITED KINGDOM

A grandmother has been hauled to court for breaking a box of eggs ‘with intent’ during a fight with her mum.

Alissa Ash, 59, got into an argument in the kitchen with her 89-year-old mum Ann-Marie Ash, during which she threw a £3 box of eggs on the floor.

But the matter ended up in court after Ms Ash reportedly refused to accept a caution from police – with the case thought to have cost the taxpayer as much as £1,000 in legal and court costs.

Magistrate James Barber said: ‘I’m struggling to find any criminality other than breaking a few eggs. I do that every time I make breakfast.’

He handed her an absolute discharge.

Police were called to Ms Ash’s mum’s house over the spat, which led to her being charged with criminal damage for ‘damaging a box of eggs at the cost of £3 with intent’.

The charge added her actions were intended ‘to destroy or damage such property’ or were ‘reckless as to whether such property would be destroyed or damaged’.

The case was heard even despite reservations from Mrs Ash, the supposed victim, telling reporters outside the court that her daughter’s prosecution was ‘a waste of time’.

In court, Ms Ash spoke only to confirm her name and address and to plead guilty.

Manni Gosal, defending, told the court: ‘She has expressed remorse for her actions.’

Mr Gosal added that Ms Ash was of ‘good character’ and has never offended before.

Surrey Police said: ‘We have a duty of care to ensure that victims of crime are carefully safeguarded, especially within domestic environments.’
