BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The closing ceremony for the `Bicara Sejarah: Pengkajian Inskripsi Makam dan Batu Nisan Bersejarah di Brunei Darussalam' project was held yesterday at the Jawatan Dalam Hall of the Brunei History Centre in Bandar Seri Begawan.

The guest of honour was Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

Pengiran Hajah Mahani binti Pengiran Haji Ahmad, Acting Deputy Principal at the Brunei History Centre, who was the event chairperson, said this project was held for the first time by the Research and Documentation Section of the Brunei History Centre in order to increase understanding of the rich heritage of the topic among the current and future generations.

"The project also aims to attract participants to conduct research, interpretation, re-evaluation or further evaluation on the heritage so it can be a source of reference," she said.

"The project also included a briefing on the conservation of tombstone casting by officers and staff of the Brunei History Centre. Some 61 people, comprising 15 students from Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB), 15 from Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) and 31 from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) took part in the project".

The guest of honour then handed over certificates to eight presenters who were invited to speak on the topic of the project on the previous day. The presenters comprised senior lecturers at UBD, KUPU SB, and graduates of UBD and UNISSA.

The guest of honour then toured a mini exhibition on replicas and casting of historical tombstones, brief history of the lives of the Sultans of Brunei, genealogy of the Sultans of Brunei and a video presentation of a research documentary on historical tombs and tombstones from UBD and UNISSA.
