The International School Brunei (ISB) multipurpose sports hall was the scene of much excitement and inspiration on Wednesday as a delegation from the Japanese national badminton team led a coaching clinic and some exhibition matches for 30 lucky ISB secondary school badminton players.
The exhibition was organised jointly by the Japanese Embassy in Brunei Darussalam as well as the ISB Physical Education Department. The Japan team is in the sultanate as part of the Brunei Japan Badminton Exchange to commemorate the 70th birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Boikiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
Thirty enthusiastic ISB badminton players, from Year 7-11 were involved in the coaching clinic with the Japanese delegation of five top-level doubles and singles players, as well as their coach, Yosuke Nakanishi and Yoshinor Uematsu, General Manager. The most well-known Japanese player present was Sho Sasaki, who competed in both the London and Rio Olympic games.
Reflecting on the success of the event, Mark Phipps, ISB's Head of Physical Education thanked the Japanese Embassy as well as the Japanese players, remarking that, "in sports whether you win or lose is not always the most important factor, but rather how much fun is had. And judging from the smiles and laughter from both the Japanese team and the ISB players, fun was certainly had!"
The Japanese team will play a series of exhibition matches against the Brunei national badminton team at the Indoor Stadium this week.
