A drinks expert has debunked some of the biggest and most common myths about wine, setting the record straight about leaving bottles to age and 'inferior' screw top wines

At the end of a long day, sometimes there's nothing like opening a bottle of your favourite drink and sitting down to enjoy a glass, especially over dinner.

But while many people would consider themselves an expert on certain wines and beverages, it seems there's still a lot many don't know.

Thankfully, an expert has come to the rescue and has debunked some of the biggest myths around wine to 'set the record straight' once and for all.

Tom Bell, Drinks Expert and founder of DrinkWell, shared his myth-busting information with The Mirror, and claims that one of the common errors people make is assuming that low sugar wine doesn't ever taste good.

He said: "We've heard this one a few times before, and we're happy to reassure those everywhere looking for a healthier tipple, that a lower-sugar wine does not need to affect the taste.

"There are a number of ways to reduce the amount of sugar in the wine, but two common ways to do this are through the fermentation process and the use of early-harvested grapes.

"In both cases, there's less residual sugar left in the final product which may change the taste slightly - but not always for the worse."

He went on to share how it's "completely incorrect" that red wine should never be chilled in the fridge.

"It is the case that certain reds - such as Merlot - taste better served at room temperature, but there are many exceptions to this rule and a slightly chilled red can be the perfect summer evening beverage.

"Opt for lighter-bodied reds with fruity notes and chill for 60 minutes in the fridge before serving; a warm weather game-changer!"

Another misconception many people make about wine according to the expert is that if a bottle has a screw top, it must be 'inferior', but he believes this isn't the case anymore and it would be a mistake to forgo a screwtop if it's the wine you want.

"In the past, wines with screw tops were seen as inferior to wine sealed - but this isn’t necessarily the case.

"Screw tops are just as effective as corks at preventing oxidation within the bottle, and definitely not an indicator of wine quality."

Other wine 'myths' include people believing that rosé is simply just a mix of red and white wine and that the older the wine is the better it will taste.

He adds: "The latter is only true for an incredibly small number of wines - those with high acid or tannin levels go through a complex chemical reaction over time that can positively affect the wine flavour.

"However, the majority of bottles are meant to be consumed within a couple of years, and ageing them will likely make absolutely no difference to the flavour."

This comes after a fellow wine expert recently debunked the spoon hack for keeping prosecco bubbly and shared what to do instead.
