BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The Magistrate's Court yesterday ordered two local men to settle fines, or serve jail in default of payment, after they pleaded guilty to possession of smuggled cigarettes.

Twenty-five-year-old Mohamad bin Yaakub was sentenced to a fine of $2,500 for possession of seven cartons of cigarettes. He has to serve jail for two months in default of payment.

Twenty-three-year-old Hasan bin Badarudin was ordered to pay a fine of $1,500, or serve jail for one month in default, for possessing four cartons of cigarettes.

The defendants arrived in a car at the Kuala Lurah Control Post at 10.40am on September 25, 2016 when customs examiners inspected the vehicle and found the undeclared cigarettes in the rear trunk. Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid presided over the case.
