The Magistrate's Court yesterday charged two local men with committing theft and mischief at a place of worship.

Thirty-one-year-old Fadly Farzuan bin Muda allegedly stole a safe deposit box containing $42 at Lorong 3 Selatan Mosque, Seria between 2am and 3am on October 18, 2016. He is also accused of causing damage to the safe deposit box.

Twenty-nine-year-old Abdullah Mukhlis bin Khalid allegedly assisted Fadly Farzuan in the act. Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid did not take pleas from the defendants and remitted the case to the Intermediate Court to hear, seeing that the penalties for the offence surpass her court's jurisdiction.

The charges against Fadly Farzuan carries a maximum jail term of 10 years with whipping for stealing from a place of worship, and a maximum jail sentence of two years or a fine or both for the mischief.

The charge against Abdullah Mukhlis carries a maximum imprisonment Of five years with fine. DPP Aiman Zakaria appeared for the Public Prosecutor.
