In view of the current cases of gastroenteritis in the country, the Ministry of Health (MoH) reminded members of the public to always practise good hygiene and take preventive steps to check the spread of germs causing the disease.
In a press statement, the ministry urged everyone, especially children, to take precautionary measures such as washing hands with soap and water before and after meals or after using restrooms as well as cleaning the toilet, including the flush holder and seat, with disinfectants after each use.
People must not share towels, food utensils or other utensils with others who have fever or are not will and avoid from attending school, work or public places within 48 hours after recovering from diarrhea and vomiting.
Gastroenteritis is caused by abdominal (stomach and intestine) infection that will cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pains and fever and it could spread through food, beverages, hands and contaminated surfaces.
This infection interferes with the absorption of water from the intestines and can cause dehydration in the body. Therefore, patients are advised to drink a lot of water or specially rehydrated beverages that are available at clinics or nearby pharmacies.
Most patients with this infection can recover naturally, but some cases require more time to heal.
A total of 766 cases of gastroenteritis cases have been reported so far this year, mostly among children aged five years and below.
The ministry said it will continue to monitor the situation from time to time and will update the public with any developments if necessary.
For any further information, members of the public can call the Darussalam line 123.
