Velosi (B) Sdn Bhd (Velosi), a firm contributing to the curriculum of technical institutions across Brunei, recently gave a demonstration in non-destructive testing (NDT) methods to 36 students.

Held at the Marine Construction Yard (MCY), the demonstration was carried out by some Velosi inspection personnel and covered theoretical and practical aspects of NDT methods such as radiographic testing, dye penetrant testtng, magnetic particle testing, ultrasonic testing, positive metal identification, ferrite testing, hardness testing and thickness gauging.

The coaching was part of the company's efforts to fulfil the Local Business Development (LBD) target of having 100 per cent locals in the industry.

Afiq Suren bin Muhd Bahruddin, a radiation protection officer cum NDT instructor, said that Velosi personnel visit the Mechanical Engineering of Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) Sultan Bolkiah Campus and Plant Engineering students at IBTE Jefri Bolkiah Campus several times a week to provide NDT coaching as a part of the institutions' curriculum requirement.

"We do not have a lot of local NDT specialists in Brunei," said Afiq, adding that the coaching was an opportunity for students to understand NDT so that they can try pursuing a career in NDT in the future.

"The NDT coaching provided by Velosi only prepares them to sit for the course provided by companies to be a certified inspector."

Haji Rosli bin Haji Md Daud, Executive Director of Velosi, said that without NDT inspections, there would be high chance of failures in equipment or catastrophes.

"Thankfully BSP is one of the best in the world with over 50 platforms. Metals corrode easily in offshore areas and in the event of a gas leak, it can be catastrophic, and hence the need for NDT," he added.

Ramon M Alano, Contract Manager of Velosi, explained that another benefit of coaching the students is that it would increase awareness on how NDT is a required part in the industry especially to ensure that the assets and equipment are safe to be used by personnel.

"More than five years ago, NDT was a very separate topic for the locals because there was no proper awareness, but when we partner with the schools, they are able to acquire the knowledge from professionals in the field," Ramon said.

"Now, people are interested because of the continuous awareness programmes conducted by firms such as Velosi and in the future we can get NDT personnel from those schools when they graduate," he added.
NDT methods are currently used in testing and inspection of piping and related structures of offshore and onshore facilities.
