PTET Host Teacher's Forum

TUTONG

In its latest flagship Teachers' Forum held at Tutong Sixth Form Centre (PTE Tutong), the college's Teacher Development Unit (TDP) facilitated the presentation of three classroom-based investigations, two of which involved Psychology and Sociology, a press release stated.

Psychology and sociology go hand in hand - they are both the scientific study of people. Both help people understand the dynamics of emotions, relationships and behaviours better.

Cikgu Nurul Hadina binti Haji Alias, Assistant Head of Sociology at Tutong Sixth Form Centre (PTE Tutong), presented first on improving A-Level students' writing and critical thinking in her subject.

Writing in Sociology is an inherent part of the learning process that enables sociologists to observe our students' thinking and intellectual development. When students enter Lower 6, their writing capabilities are inadequate to equip them to write critically.

Experts cautioned that the mere presence of student talk, no matter how frequent, does not automatically signal that a discussion is taking place. Experts also went further and argued that even when discussions did happen, not all forms of discussion lead to deep engaged learning.

This study investigated the effectiveness of teachers assuming the role of writing instructors, particularly emphasising on the aspect of critical thinking and whether this would impact students' writing in Sociology.

Meanwhile, in another highly related presentation, Head of Psychology, Cikgu Veronica ChungAi Wei discussed the importance of scaffolding critical evaluation skills of A-Level Psychology learners.

A common challenge among A-Level Psychology students is developing the ability to critically evaluate which encompasses a range of sophisticated cognitive skills. This is deemed a worthy area of analysis, as evaluative questions not only hold majority of the marks in exams, but it allows and evident that the students understand the field in more angle and depth.

The forum concluded with the presentation of certificates to the paper presenters by the Principal, Cikgu Hajah Murni binti Abdullah.
