PETALING JAYA

All leaders must work towards putting an end to religious and racial extremism in the spirit of togetherness, says the chairman of the Conference of Rulers.

In his opening speech on the second day of the 260th Meeting of the Conference of Rulers, chairman Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir said the new government has to take the opportunity to propel the country to greater heights by uniting all Malaysians, regardless of race and religion.

He said the new government should support and strengthen the Rukun Negara with its principles being declared at functions by leaders and not mere youths with loud voices.

“I call upon the new government to strengthen and carry the Rukun Negara principles which were declared by the fourth Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 1970.

“The spirit and the values of the Rukun Negara must be the practice and faith of all Malaysians, not mere writing in reading materials.

“I propose that the Rukun Negara be declared at suitable functions. This will prove that the government is serious in making Rukun Negara the basis and guide for all Malaysians.

“I urge the new government to instil the spirit of togetherness among Malaysians. I hope there are no more leaders who will raise racial or religious issues to provoke the people,” said Tuanku Muhriz.

He also said it is the responsibility of those who were appointed to head the country to lead the country forward.

“I congratulate those who have been elected in the 15th General Election and state elections. I also congratulate those who have been appointed as the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers. These posts, with great responsibilities, are a big opportunity to lead the nation forward. I am of the view that this important role must be carried out guided by the tenets of the Rukun Negara,” said Tuanku Muhriz.
