‘Paeng’ Leaves 110 Dead, Over P2B Agriculture, Infrastructure Damage

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has recorded over 120 landslides and soil erosions in various parts of the country during the onslaught of severe tropical storm “Paeng” that has so far left at least 110 people dead.
A few of the landslides were deadly as in the case of Barangay Kusiong at the boundary of Datu Odin Sinsuat and Datu Blah Sinsuat towns in Maguindanao that left at least 12 people dead and over 100 houses buried while some caused road closures.
Based on the NDRRMC data, the rain-induced landslides were monitored mostly in Western Visayas with 47, Central Visayas with 23 and eastern Visayas with 18.
A total of 422 roads were rendered not passable or partially passable either due to massive flooding or landslides and soil erosion while more than 100 bridges were either impassable or partially passable at the height of “Paeng” onslaught.
Casualties
“Paeng’ has already left the country’s area of responsibility but not before leaving at least 110 dead, 79 of them were already confirmed to be typhoon-related while 31 are yet to be validated. A total of 33 other people, on the other hand, were on the missing list.
A total of 101 people were also reported to have been injured.
Clearing and restoration
Based on the latest data on Tuesday morning, Nov. 1, most of the roads shut down by landslides were already cleared while almost all of the flooding in over 500 areas across the country have already subsided.
Of the 154 areas reported to have lost power supply, the NDRRMC said the electricity supply in 140 areas were already restored.
At least 41 areas, mostly in Eastern Visayas, with 36 reported that their communication lines were cut and as of Tuesday morning, the NDRRMC said only six areas were able to regain communication lines.
Damage
The damage to agriculture and infrastructure has ballooned to over P2 billion as of Tuesday morning as more reports coming from various affected provinces began to be received at the NDRRMC.
In agriculture, the NDRRMC reported that the damage is almost P1.3 billion so far. The assessment is still ongoing.
The hardest hit in terms of agriculture damage is Bicol Region which reported over P700 million, followed by Western Visayas with P293 million, and Central Luzon with P233.7 million.
The damage to infrastructure, based on the latest assessment, was at P760 million–the hardest hit were Bicol Region with P375 million, Central Visayas with P272 million, and Northern Mindanao with P110 million.
The NDRRMC also reported that there were more than 6,000 houses destroyed by “Paeng”, at least 1,500 of them were totally damaged.
