KALIMANTAN

SAMARINDA, KN – Pepper Malonan 1 is a type of local pepper variety that is widely developed in Kutai Kartanegara Regency and East Kalimantan in general.

"Our Malonan 1 pepper has been designated as a national superior variety with a decree from the Minister of Agriculture Number SK: 448/Kpts/KB.120/7/2015," said Head of the East Kalimantan Plantation Service, Ujang Rachmad, Thursday (15/9/2022).

In addition to having a high content of essential oils, piperine and oleoserin, it turns out that Malonan 1 pepper is also tolerant of stem rot disease.

Even the superior pepper of the Etam Continent is able to produce throughout the year with an average productivity of around 2.17 tons per hectare.

Pepper seeds commonly used by farmers in Loa Janan and Muara Badak sub-districts, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, are 5 to 6 segments or roots of the pepper mother plant.

"However, with the innovation introduced by AIAT Balitbangtan Kaltim, pepper plants can be grown from only one segment or root, so that more seeds are obtained," he explained.

Currently, IP2TP Samboja has a 1 hectare pepper garden which has been planted since 2017.

"And now some have started production," he said.

This nursery, continued Ujang, is expected to be a source of Malonan 1 pepper seeds for the development of pepper commodities which were once a popular commodity in Kutai Kartanegara Regency.

"Hopefully the development of Malonan 1 can restore the glory of East Kalimantan pepper," he hoped.

In Kutai Kartanegara until 2020, precisely in Loa Janan, it is still the center for pepper commodities with a plant area of 3,379.34 hectares or 75 percent of the entire pepper area in Kutai Kartanegara Regency.

Meanwhile, the production is 3,263.02 tons or 90 percent of the total pepper production in Kutai Kartanegara Regency.

Apart from Loa Janan, pepper is also developed in Muara Badak and Samboja sub-districts.

"The average price of white pepper (Malonan 1) is Rp. 106,000 per kilogram," said Ujang. (yans/sul/ky/adpimprov kaltim)
