PTET Group Claim Student Company Crown

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Stygian & Co from the Tutong Sixth Form Centre (PTET) was crowned the champion of the Junior Achievement ( JA) Brunei's first Student Company of the Year Competition, earning them the rights to represent Brunei to compete in the Asia Pacific JA Company of the Year Competition in Tokyo, Japan in February next year, after beating three other upper secondary school teams in the competition yesterday.

Innovance from Dull Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Zillah College were named runner-ups, followed by third place winner Bonana Company from the Meragang Sixth Form Centre and Downlifted from the Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre during the competition held at the Design and Technology Building in Anggerek Desa Technology Park yesterday.

During the competition, JA student companies presented the results of their enterprise and learning experience before a panel of four judges who assessed their respective business performance based on the awards criteria.
"The competition is not simply a business competition for the young people. The goal is to balance the business achievements of each student company as a whole with the personal development of each individual member within the student company," said JA in a press release.

JA added that for a company to win the award, it is not sufficient just to run a financially successful JA student company or have an exciting product or service. "JA student company members also must demonstrate that they understand how and why the company performed as it did. Judges will be looking for evidence of innovation and the application of new ideas in all aspects of running the student company. They also will look for an understanding that continuous improvement through innovation is essential to the success of a business," the press release added.

The students' presentations were evaluated based on criteria such as Business Presentation and Interview as well as the Scoring of Business Presentation and an Interview.

The invited judges were Pengiran Azaleen bin Pengiran Dato Haji Mustapha, Head of Retail Banking and Branch Network at Baiduri Bank Berhad; Chang Ai Lee, Head of Business Banking at HSBC Brunei; Pengiran Zainul Asri bin Pengiran Abdul Razak, Manager at DARE (Darussalam Enterprise); and Denis Chai, Director and founder of DESEO Living Gallery, ICimchi Restaurant and De Flamingos Co.

Junior Achievement ( JA) Brunei is a non-profit organisation registered under the Societies Act (Chapter 203) of Brunei Darussalam and a member of JA Worldwide, one of the largest global non-governmental organisation dedicated to addressing fundamental social and economic challenges of young people by education and empowering their economic success.

JA Brunei's financial sponsors are HSBC and Baiduri Bank Berhad. HSBC is the main sponsor for JA More than Money Programme, where volunteers will teach primary students the concept of earning, spending and saving money prudently.

Baiduri Bank Berhad is the main sponsor for JA Company Programme, which teaches secondary students how to start businesses that create jobs and prepare them to succeed in a global economy.
