Bruneian waters are not affected by the red tide, the Fisheries Department said yesterday following reports of the emergence of the phenomenon on the west coast of Sabah, Malaysia.
In a press release, the department however, reminded fisheries and other fish product importers not to bring into Brunei any products, especially small fishes and shellfish from the affected area.
As a precautionary measure, visitors to Sabah are advised to refrain from eating any type of shellfish or small fishes whose gills, guts and internal organs could not be removed.
The department also advised the public here to remove the fish's gills, guts and internal organs before cooking them and also to avoid eating fish and shellfish whose origin is unknown.
The department said it will constantly monitor the situation and will inform the public on the latest findings from time to time.
The department also urged the public, especially fishermen to assist in detecting the red tide in the country's waters and report any changes in water colour and mass fish deaths to the department through the number 2770066 or hotline 7297771.
