SMPAP, HRSB Launched Language Month

 September 30th, 2016  |  09:14 AM  |   1086 views

LUMUT, KUALA BELAIT

Students are inclined to be familiar with English terminologies due to the lack of usage of Malay expressions, said the Acting Deputy Director of the Language and Literature Bureau, Hajah Sariani binti Haji Ishak.

In her speech for the launching of Sambutan Bulan Bahasa' (Language Month) at Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah Secondary School (SMPAP HRSB) in Lumut on Wednesday, she said that standard Malay, widely used in Brunei's education system, has adopted numerous foreign terms that have tainted the purity of Bahasa Melayu, which is the country's official language. This has resulted in many youths being unaware of most Malay terminologies, she added.

Also present as the event's guest of honour was Wardi bin Haji Mohammad Ali, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Tourism) at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.

To help students learn more, the Language Month Roadshow was launched back in July and has now arrived to the Belait District.

The programme saw Malay language themed activities, such as poetry presentations, skits and exhibitions, and was attended by hundreds of students from primary and secondary schools in the district.
