KOTA KINABALU (Aug 21): A united opposition front in Sabah is the key to winning more seats in the coming 15th General Election (GE15), said Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH) chief Datuk Christina Liew.
Therefore, Liew said Sabah PH’s door remains open to any parties who want to work together towards achieving this goal.
To a question on the possibility of Sabah PH working together with Parti Warisan again in GE15, Liew stressed that PH Sabah is open to working with anybody that can sit down and talk with the coalition.
“A united front is imperative in order to win more seats. If we are not, we may not be able to achieve our target of seats,” she told reporters when distributing the Jalur Gemilang to members of the public patronising the weekly morning market today.
Liew, who is Api-Api assemblywoman, said that Sabah PH is the voice of Sabahans in seeking to have their rights fulfilled.
“Whether you are a Malayan party or a Sabah party, you still need to work with the federal government, allocations also come from the federal government. As far as PKR is concerned, we have representatives in all states of Malaysia. So we work on that basis,” she added.
When asked whether the discussion on seat negotiation among Sabah PH parties would be smooth, Liew replied: “Yes. I believe that every party and its leaders that has that in mind, that we want to settle the seats distribution before we go into the election.
“I believe the representatives from each party will be able to help us to achieve our target which is to win as many seats as we can.”
PKR’s Inanam assemblyman Peto Galim who was also present, said several conditions have been agreed by Sabah PH parties in the matter of seat distribution which include the party that is given the opportunity to contest in a parliamentary constituency must be winnable and its candidate is accepted by the constituents.
Meanwhile, when queried about the relationship between Sabah PH and Sabah Muda especially with GE15 looming, Liew said: “We work very well as the relationship is well established in both the Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah. I don’t see any problems.
“The next step we will take is seat negotiation. That is the ultimate purpose later on but I believe a unified opposition is very important in the 15th GE. Only with a united front will we have a bigger chance of winning more seats.
“We believe that we are able to work with all the component parties among PH and Muda,” said Liew who is also Tawau Member of Parliament.”
Yesterday, Muda President Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman when opening Muda Sabah’s command centre said that in terms of working with PH, it is very clear as Muda worked very well with its component parties in the Johor state election as well as in Parliament.
On the the programme at Gaya Street today, Liew said that in conjunction with the Merdeka month, she and PKR leaders are celebrating and distributing the Jalur Gemilang to the public.
