Kean Feared Lions Comback After Win

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

DPMM FC head coach Steve Kean anticipated that the Garena Young Lions' comeback was alive after seeing his side dropped their high performance levels which eventually ended in a 5-3 win at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium on Monday.

The struggling Young Lions scored three goals in a space of 14 minutes putting DPMM FC under the cosh but concerns already arose once they led 4-0 in the 35th minute.

"It was kind of a Jekyll & Hyde situation because the first 30, 35 minutes we were exceptional. But I smelt it coming to be honest. The last five, six minutes of the first half I thought we were a little bit lazy and we let Young Lions get a grip of the game," said Kean in a post-match interview.

"We never moved the ball as quickly as we had the first 30, 35 minutes. So I said to the lads at half time forget about the score and to go out and win the second half

"The Young Lions don't care if it's 4-0, 5-0 or 6-0. They play with spirit and as soon as they got one goal then theirconfidence came flooding back in. They got two goals, got another goal, and all of the sudden we were in the back foot and holding on," he added.

"It has to be a learning curve and the only thing that I've said to the guys who haven't played so much they have to play with freshness, the ones who haven't played.

"I let the other guys off the hook a little bit because it's two games in four days. I let them off slightly but I thought in the second half we were way below standard and in the first half we were exceptional".

Kean was pleased with their dominant displays for half an hour including their clinical finishing but warned his charges the dangers of discontinuing their strong start.

"Our finishing was good, our pattern of play, intensity, crossing, two or three-touch passing were great up to the fourth goal. And that I've just felt that we thought the game was finished but it's never finished.

"You don't get points after 30 minutes. I said to the boys you can't take your foot out of the gas and be disrespectful and think it's okay that we're 4-0 up because before you know it it's 4-3.

"The quality of our finishing and overall play was excellent for 30 minutes and after that we were below par."

The win could potentially continue to haunt the Gegar Gegar men at the end of the season if it is decided on goal difference should Tampines Rovers FC end the season level on points assuming that the former conjure two more victories.

"It is a shame because we really had an opportunity probably continuing the good play from the first 30 minutes and our goal difference could look a lot healthier tonight.

"You never know that could count as a point and if we manage to beat Tampines and Balestier we don't know about Tampines's goal difference if they're better than us so that's a missed opportunity for us tonight to kick on and improve on the first thirty minutes," he continued.

DPMM FC must win against Tampines Rovers to continue the hunt for second place and will at least temporarily climb ahead of their rivals with three points this Saturday.
