Laos and Vietnam have agreed to further promote bilateral cooperation in legislative ties.
The statements were made by Lao President of the National Assembly Pany Yathortou and her Vietnamese counterpart at a bilateral meeting held in Vientiane Capital on Sept 26 on the occasion of Ms Thi Kim Ngan’s official visit to Laos.
At the meeting, both presidents highly valued the bilateral cooperation between Laos and Vietnam over the past years, especially the exchange of visits by high-ranking delegations of the two countries and the two national assemblies.
The relationship between Vietnam and Laos has continued to develop in an effective and pragmatic fashion across several fields over the years, which has been evidenced through the exchange of various high-level visits and thriving cooperation in economics, trade and investment.
As of December 2015, Laos had licensed 413 Vietnamese projects, many of which have operated effectively, contributing to the two countries’ development. Two-way trade hit US$485.7 million in the first seven months of this year.
Besides, cooperation in defence and security, energy, health care, tourism, education and training has been expanded.
Especially, the affiliation between the two legislative bodies has been consolidated over the recent past. They have supported each other in human resource development and the building of technical infrastructure.
The two sides inked a cooperation agreement in July 3, 2012 which has served as a foundation for them to foster collaboration, both bilaterally and multi-laterally.
Apart from regular exchanges of delegations, they have shared experience in institutional and legal building, and law enforcement.
The two sides have organised training courses for their legislators and seminars to help them exchange experiences in legislative activities. They also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the training of NA deputies.
The two NAs have coordinated closely with each other at regional and international parliamentary forums, and been mutually supportive at inter-parliamentary forums.
They also strengthened coordination and cooperation to help Laos successfully host as the Chair of ASEAN in 2016, contributing to the maintenance of intra-bloc unity and solidarity.
At the same day, President of the National Assembly of Vietnam called on President Bounnhang Vorachith in Vientiane Capital.
