BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The efforts of the Brunei Council on Social Welfare (MKM) to help enhance, the lives of the less privileged of society continued as the inaugural class for Al-Quran Reading and Religious Knowledge was held yesterday at the Melabau Shopping Complex in Serusop.

Hamidah binti Haji Lakem, Secretary for the MKM, told the Bulletin that the programme aimed to help their clients learn how to read the Al-Quran and to be more knowledgeable in Islam, with keen assistance from Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif All (UNISSA) graduates.

The graduates who took part in this first programme were Nor Azimah binti Rosli and Mohammad Ariffin bin Abdul Kahan Hamidah added that apart from helping society to enhance their knowledge on Islam, the programme will also help the unemployed graduates earn an income.

MKM focuses on helping the less privileged as well as to address social issues in the country through various programmes, which also include donations, contributions from the public, companies and other organisations, training, guidance, awareness events and other activities.

She said that to be eligible for assistance, the family or individual in question must earn $250 or less in a month, and usually donations come in the shape of food and drinks, such as rice, noodles and packed drinks.
Zubaidah binti Dato Haji Abu Zar, a committee member, said that MKM also has a Fidyah scheme, where the public donates cash to buy food and drinks at school canteens for less privileged students.

Currently, there are several schools involved in this scheme, which is led by Haji Yusof bin Abdul Halim from MKM.

The schools are Sungai Hancing Primary School, Sengkurong Primary School, Sultan Abdul Bubin Primary School, Tanah Jambu Primary School and, the latest to be involved, Pintu Malim Primary School.
