More than 60 officials from the Defence and Security Committees of the legislative bodies of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam met in Khanh Hoa Province, Vietnam on Sept 21.
The meeting aimed at promoting socio-economic development and ensuring security in the Cambodia -Laos- Vietnam Development Triangle Area, according to a report by the Vietnam News Agency.
Speaking at the event, Vice Chairman of Vietnam’s National Assembly Do Ba Ty stressed the position and importance of the Development Triangle Area for the three countries.
As the representative agencies of the people, the National Assemblies of the three countries promoted and supported the government in each country in constructing and developing the economy in the area, helping reduce poverty and accelerating cultural and social developments as well as ensuring security and order in the area.
He recommended that the conference needed to focus on discussing and exchanging experiences on issues benefiting the area, and the building of a region of peace, friendship and development, thus contributing to growth in each country.
The conference heard reports from committees on socio-economic development and foreign affairs in provinces in the Development Triangle Area in the past years and the result of the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed at the second conference in Champasak, Laos in September 2015.
According to Vietnam’s report, the country’s five provinces in the region – Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong and Binh Phuoc – achieved an annual growth rate of nine percent and an income of US$1,600 per capita in 2015.
At the conference, participants reached agreements on many important issues such as the acceleration of planting border markers, strengthening the monitoring of border gates, and promoting trade and tourism.
They agreed to hold the conference every two years. The next will take place in Cambodia in 2018.
