MIRI, SARAWAK

Starting today, all the 370,000 Malaysian Armed Forces veterans in the country will enjoy new health services provided by the government under the Electronic Medical Automation Supply System (Emass).

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein will launch the system here today, coinciding with the inaugural national-level Armed Forces Veteran Entrepreneur Carnival held at the civic centre here.

According to Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVATM) deputy president Capt (Rtd) Sharuddin Omar, these former servicemen can obtain medical prescriptions free of charge from any of the over 1,000 pharmacies nationwide under Emass.

“Emass is another caring service of the government as it will surely make it convenient for the veterans to obtain their supplies of medicine and other health related items, but the prescription must be from government clinics or hospitals; and they too need to produce their PVATM cards,” said Sharuddin when met by The Borneo Post here yesterday.

Sharuddin, who is also the carnival organising chairman, said the launch of Emass would be among the four highlights of the event.

He said another breakthrough for the PVATM would be the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the four defence industries, including Wescar, DefTech and Armed Forces Ex-Servicemen Affairs Corporation (Perhebat).

Under the agreement, these four industries will train retiring members of the force or provide employment to them.

“The two other highlights are the presentation of RM80,000 cheque to an applicant of the Ex-Armed Forces Loan Scheme for business setup, and the presentation of Pingat Jasa Malaysia award to 198 Armed Forces veterans in Sarawak,” he said.

The defence minister will also have lunch with 1,400 PVATM members and their families.

On the carnival, Sharuddin said 60 stalls had been set up by the Armed Forces veteran entrepreneurs from across the country, coming here to promote their services and products.

“It will also host a military exhibition and karaoke competition.”

Visitors also stand a chance to win over 30 attractive prizes through lucky draws. Admission to the carnival, which runs from 9am to 6pm, is free.
