President Receives UN Secretary General, Japan’s Prime Minister

President Bounnhang Vorachit on Sep 7 received seperate courtesy calls from the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe.

 

The two foreign guests are in Laos for the ASEAN UN Summit, the East Asia Summit, the ASEAN Plus Three Summit, the ASEAN Japan Summit, the Mekong Japan Summit and other events being held on the sidelines of the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summits being hosted in Vientiane Capital from Sep 6-8.

 

The President expressed appreciation for the work of the UN Secretary General and upon the successful execution of his post over the past decade, especially his efforts in promoting international peace and cooperation for development despite a number of challenges. The President also praised the success of UN Summit in 2015 where the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted.

 

The President acknowledged that the Lao government had failed to achieve a number of things and that continued efforts are needed to incorporate sustainable development goals into the 8th five-year socio-economic development plan, the 10-year socio-economic development strategy (2016-2025) and Vision 2030 of the country.

 

The Lao PDR attaches importance to addressing challanges posed by unexploded ordnance left since the war, and joins international efforts in tackling climate change and environmental protection issues.

 

President Bounnhang also highly valued the cooperation between the Lao PDR and the United Nations especially in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals and the national socio-economic development plan in the Lao PDR.

 

The UN Secretary General expressed his belief that the bilateral cooperation between the UN and the Lao PDR would be increasingly strengthened.

 

In his talks with the Japanese Prime Minister, President Bounnhang asked the visiting guest to extend his regards to Emperor Akihito and the Japanese dynasty.

 

The President appreciated the working visit by the Japanese Prime Minister to Laos to attend the summits held on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit and highly valued the bilateral relations and cooperation between Laos and Japan over the past six decades.

 

The President also mentioned his appreciation for the successful bilateral meeting between the Japanese Prime Minister and his Lao counterpart and the adoption by the two governments of their cooperation plan for sustainable development in Laos.

 

Lastly, President Bounnhang expressed his gratitude to the Japanese government for its assistance in various areas over the past years and its support for Laos’ hosting of the ASEAN Summits and related meetings in Vientiane.
