Malaysia's bilateral trade with Brunei Darussalam has diversified and expanded from the oil and gas related sector to manufacturing and services sectors.
Today, processed food, iron and steel products, chemicals and chemicals products, electrical and electronic products as well as petroleum products are Malaysia's major exports to the Sultanate, according to Datuk Ghulam Jelani bin Khanizaman, Malaysian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam.
"In 2015, bilateral trade stood at USD831.7 million and for the first five months of 2016, total bilateral trade was recorded at USD356.1 million," he said at the 59th National Day of Malaysia reception held at The Empire Hotel & Country Club in Jerudong last night.
The guest of honour was Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister's Office, who was accompanied by his spouse.
The high commissioner also noted that Malaysia and Brunel Darussalarn have so much to offer each other, particularly in economy, trade and Investment related sectors as well as in education, tourism and security.
"Both countries have thus far, taken great strides in consolidating bilateral relations and cooperation," he said.
"We hope, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam could further expand and intensify our existing cooperation in other areas of mutual concern ie investment, education, culture as well as tourism," he said.
The reception commenced with the Malaysia and Brunei national anthems, followed by a recitation of prayers, the cake-cutting and presentation of a token of appreciation from the high commissioner to the guest of honour.
