The number of travellers between Brunei and Taiwan is expected to increase following the Taiwanese visa waiver programme for Bruneians which came into effect from August 1, 2016.
This was stated by Jason C H Wan, the official representative of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Brunei Darussalam, during a meeting with local travel agencies yesterday.
Brunei, along with Thailand, now has visa-free access to Taiwan.
It is good time for local travel agencies to organise packaged tours to Taiwan as the country has ensured a more Muslim-friendly environment with ample facilities for visitors, he added.
He said the new initiative makes travel to Taiwan a pleasant timesaving and money-saving trip.
Before August 1, 2016, it used to take three working days and B$70 for a visa.
Yesterday's meeting was held by TECO to understand the needs and concerns of Bruneian people travelling to Taiwan as well as to promote Taiwan's tourism industry among Brunei travel agencies.
The TECO official briefed the travel agencies on Taiwan's Muslim -friendly environment nowadays, as well as the five packaged tours recommended by the Tourism Bureau of Taiwan on its website (http://taiwan.net.tw), namely Ecotourism, Culture & Heritage, LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability), Night Markets and Rail Tour.
To encourage more Bruneians to visit Taiwan, TECO will hold a lucky draw by the end of this year for those who travel to Taiwan in 2016 and the winners stand a chance to get exquisite gifts. Besides, the office will also present certificates of appreciation to the travel agencies that have arrange packaged tours to Taiwan, the official said.
Jason hoped that the Bruneian government will also waive visa requirements for Taiwanese on a reciprocal basis.
This will help bring in more Taiwanese visitors to Brunei which will not only benefit the local airline company, local shops, and hotels but also create more investment opportunities for the Sultanate.
Figures released by TECO showed that 1,458 Bruneians visited Taiwan in 2015 and 1,650 visited in 2014, while some 285 people from Taiwan visited Brunei last year. The number stood at 2,411 in 2013 and 298 in 2014.
