The Youth Science Forum of the Tutong Sixth Form Centre (PTET YSF) recently organised a talk event in two sessions for students.
The first session - led by Teo Zhi Perng, the former president of PTET YSF, together with Amirul Maidin, Wafaa Wajihah and Maimunah binti Haji Abdul Rahman - was based around the premise of finding a way to stop carbon emissions and climate change that have which has caused a surge in global warming since the 1960s.
Among the points that were raised in response were carbon capture storage (CSS), sustainable and renewable energy resources, and public transport in Brunei.
The second session - led by Nisa Haidi, another former president of PTET YSF, alongside Faiz Zallani, Alex Wong and Fads Aliani - dealt with the question of genetic engineering, to reduce the early onset of monogenetic disorders in humans.
The student panel debated on the ethics of genetic engineering to produce a race of super, intelligent beings, which ultimately led to a speculation on whether natural ability was better than a nurtured talent.
Onn Chee Sheng, the founder of PTET YSF, moderated the talks and was able get the students through the open-ended discussion.
The event concluded with the participants being awarded with certificates of excellence for lending their insights to the forum sessions.
The student media team, led by Joshua Chong, was also awarded for their efforts in recording the talk session, which will soon be available on PTET YSF's official YouTube channel.
The YSF is a student-run committee, which has been organising lunchtime debates on a fortnight basis, since 2015.
Each session draws out the students' interest and enthusiasm on specific topics, related to the natural sciences.
