BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The Department of Malay Studies of Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College (Maktab Duli) hosted the college's 5th Language Day yesterday in a bid to enhance the application of the Malay language among students.

The ceremony began with a welcoming address made by Hajah Norhana binti Haji Abdullah, the Head of the Department of Malay Studies and chairperson of the event.

This was followed by a speech from Hajah Monaliza binti Haji Abdul Halim, the Acting Principal of Maktab Duli, who said that language and literature are important components in a nation's culture and civilisation, which should not be ignored in the pace of development.

She emphasised that it is the responsibility of Brunei citizens and residents to honour the application of the Malay language as the official language of Brunei Darussalam.

"Bahasa Melayu (Malay language) is also a main component in the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) philosophy, and a full grasp of the language is deemed necessary and important for all citizens and residents, whether they are of Malay ethnicity or otherwise," she said.

The Language Day is an annual event at Maktab Duli, and among yesterday's programme were presentations of working papers from Hajah Norhana and Hajah Zakiah binti Jikeria from the Department of Malay Studies, as well as a selection of poetry from the college's Malay language and literature club.
