The Acting Deputy Director of Ports, Helmi bin Haji Talib, assessed the competitiveness of the Muara Container Terminal (MCT) Brunei Darussalam and the regional ports in the BIMP-EAGA region, during his presentation on the final day of the Knowledge Convention 2016.
He pointed out that BIMP-EAGA is home to around 50 million people with a high number of ports handling containers, whether at multipurpose breakbulk and general cargo facilities, or at specialist container terminals such as MCT.
The Acting Deputy Director of Ports also indicated that the most realistic transshipment market which MCT could contest would be ports in Kota Kinabalu and Bintulu.
"Ports can transform their weaknesses into strength by developing competitive advantage and strategies," he said, adding that the MCT transshipment rates are on par compared to benchmarked rates across major transshipment hubs.
"Muara Port's ability to attract transshipment cargo will depend on its ability to leyel the playing field, to know what competitors are doing, develop significant competitive advantages and offer competitive shipping costs," he stated.
