The seafaring manuals and scientific discoveries made by Ahmad ibn Majid in the mid-15th Century helped to shape modern maritime studies, said Professor Madya Dr Ali bin Mohammad during his presentation yesterday at the Knowledge Convention 2016.
His paper entitled 'Tokoh Pelayaran Islam: Sumbangan ibn Majid Dalam Teknologi Pelayaran' dealt with the contributions made by the Arab navigator, cartographer and author, including the renowned 'Kitab al-Fawa'id fi-Usul 'Ilm al-Bahrwa al-Qawa'id' (Book of Useful Information on the Principles and Rules of Seamanship), which was one of the most important books on navigational theory during the Middle Ages.
The professor concluded by saying that Islam played an important role in developing oceanography, in addition to having a cultural and religious impact on the ports visited by the Arab sailors in the 15th Century.
