BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Brunei's Rio 2016 Olympians Mohd Fakhri bin Ismail, Maizurah binti Abdul Rahim and Jasper Yu Woon Chai received a major boost after they received Fitness Zone lifetime membership sponsorship yesterday. The sponsorship was presented by Wu Chun, the Managing Director of Fitness Zone.

Jasper who is the first Brunei badminton player to compete in the Olympics acknowledged the importance of the sponsorship. "This (Fitness Zone) is a top notch facility to train. I feel that Wu Chun who is a former national basketball player understands the needs of athletes. We really appreciate and are thankful for the lifetime membership."

After achieving his dream of competing in the Olympics, the 27-year-old Jaspar hopes to represent Brunei Darussalam in the next Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held in Australia's Gold Coast in 2017. "The Olympics are a life changing experience. My next target is the Commonwealth Games in 2017."

During his time in Rio, Jaspar met several famous athletes, including tennis star Novak Djokovic. "I managed to catch Novak Djokovic after his training and he said to me All the best and keep it up'. It was an unforgettable moment."

Meanwhile, Mohd Fakhri is the first Bruneian to run twice in the Olympics - in the preliminary round and the heats. He recalled his moments of nervousness yet exhilaration on the track.

He said one of the highlights of his time in Rio was when he met with the world champion sprinter Usain Bolt.

The 25-year-old Mohd Fakhri pledged to continue to train hard with the aim of taking part in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia.

In his message, Wu Chun said, "We want to extend help in moulding our promising local athletes. With this token of appreciation, we hope it will make them feel appreciated and that they will continue to inspire all youth in Brunei who share the same passion and dreams."

Fitness Zone Kiulap branch also announced that it is celebrating its 9th anniversary on August 28 with the Fete Dela Fitness that is open to the public.
